Body Reps guide

How many bones are in the human body?

Short answerAn adult has 206 bones. A newborn has around 270 to 300, and many fuse together during growth. The skeleton has five jobs: it supports the body, protects organs, gives muscles levers to move, makes blood cells and stores minerals like calcium. Anatomists split it in two: the axial and the appendicular skeleton.

How many bones does an adult have?

206. Two-oh-six. Babies start with more and fuse down.

How many bones does a baby have?

A newborn has around 270 to 300, and many fuse together during growth.

What are the five functions of the skeleton?

  1. Support: it supports the body.
  2. Protect: it protects organs.
  3. Move: it gives muscles levers to move.
  4. Make blood cells: in red bone marrow.
  5. Store minerals: like calcium.

Where are blood cells made?

In red bone marrow. Red marrow inside bones such as the pelvis, sternum and the ends of long bones makes red cells, white cells and platelets. Bones aren't dead sticks. They're factories.

What is the axial skeleton?

The axial skeleton (AK-see-ul) is the central column: skull, spine, ribs and sternum. It protects the brain, spinal cord, heart and lungs. Axial, axis: the line your body turns around.

What is the appendicular skeleton?

The appendicular skeleton (ap-en-DIK-yoo-ler) is everything that hangs off the axis: arms, legs, and the shoulder and hip girdles that attach them. Appendicular means hanging on. Appendages append.

What are the main bones of the body?

Bone Everyday name What it is
Skull—The bony case that protects the brain. Its rounded upper part, the cranium, is a shell of fused bones.
FemurThigh boneFrom hip to knee. The longest and strongest bone in the body.
HumerusUpper arm boneFrom shoulder to elbow
RibsRibcageTwelve pairs of curved bones that form a cage round the heart and lungs
PelvisHip boneThe ring of bone where the spine meets the legs. Both hip joints sit in it.
SternumBreastboneThe flat bone down the middle of the chest that most ribs attach to, at the front, through cartilage
ClavicleCollarboneLinks the sternum to the shoulder and holds the arm out from the body. One of the most commonly broken bones.
Radius—The forearm bone on the thumb side. It rolls over the ulna when you turn your palm down.
Ulna—The forearm bone on the little-finger side. Its top end forms the point of your elbow.
TibiaShin boneThe thick inner bone of the lower leg. It carries nearly all the body's weight below the knee.
Fibula—The thin outer bone of the lower leg. It carries little weight but anchors muscles and steadies the ankle.
PatellaKneecapSits in the tendon at the front of the knee. It protects the joint and gives the thigh muscles better leverage.

How many vertebrae and ribs are there?

  • 33 vertebrae in a full spine, in five regions, though the bottom ones fuse.
  • Twelve pairs of ribs. The thoracic spine has 12 vertebrae, one for each pair of ribs.

What are the five bone shapes?

Long, short, flat, irregular and sesamoid. The shape tells you the job.

  • Long: femur, humerus, tibia, fibula, radius, ulna.
  • Short: the carpals in the wrist and the tarsals in the ankle.
  • Flat: sternum, ribs, cranium and scapula.
  • Irregular: the vertebrae.
  • Sesamoid: the patella, the biggest one.

Axial or appendicular?

Choose a side, then tap bones on the figure or in the list to tag them. Then check.
